Security forces launch combing operations in hill districts to trace abducted persons
Imphal, May 18 (Wayel Kati): Tension continued to grip Manipur’s hill districts on Saturday as a total shutdown called by Kuki organisations coincided with the ongoing economic blockade enforced by Naga groups along National Highway-2.
The shutdown reportedly disrupted normal life in several Kuki-inhabited areas, while the blockade severely affected vehicular movement and transportation of essential commodities along the highway, one of the state’s key supply routes.
The protests were triggered by the recent killing of three church leaders, including a pastor, and the subsequent abduction of several individuals. Civil society organisations from different communities have intensified their agitation demanding immediate action and the safe release of the missing persons.
Meanwhile, security forces launched extensive combing and search operations across sensitive hill areas in an effort to locate the abducted persons and prevent further deterioration of the law and order situation. Troops, assisted by police and central forces, were deployed in vulnerable zones where tensions remain high.
Officials said security personnel conducted area domination exercises, vehicle checks and search operations in suspected hideouts following intelligence inputs. Additional reinforcements were also deployed along strategic stretches of NH-2 to ensure security and prevent clashes.
Reports indicated that several commercial vehicles remained stranded due to the blockade, causing inconvenience to commuters and affecting the supply of goods. Educational institutions, markets and government offices in some areas were also affected by the shutdown call.
Community organisations have expressed concern over the deteriorating situation and appealed to both the state and central governments to intervene immediately to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of civilians.
The latest developments come amid growing unrest following the killing of the three church leaders, an incident that has drawn widespread condemnation across Manipur and neighbouring states.
Security agencies have not yet disclosed any concrete information regarding the whereabouts of the abducted persons, though search operations are continuing in multiple locations.
